Crude posters of Lenin and Trotsky adorn the threadbare walls of an office in a desolate part of town, and a group of outcast revolutionaries hatch a scheme to overthrow the ruling powers and bring equality and a classless society to mankind. The beginning of an Eisenstein film? Bunuel? Renoir?Try 'Astro Boy,' the upcoming animated film featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage and Kristen Bell about a boy robot (Freddie Highmore) that leaves his scientist father after finding out he isn't human. Ostensibly a film for children -- with a fringe following of fanboys, thanks to its comic book series -- the movie features very adult ideas of ownership and class structure that will most likely be future fodder for college philosophy classes around the country.
While it's no secret that Hollywood films tend to skew left in general, 'Astro Boy' may be the first animated blockbuster to discuss, if not necessarily endorse, explicit Marxist ideologies (albeit in cute robot form, of course.) In the movie, the aforementioned outcasts, led by Robotsky, form the Robot Revolutionary Front, stenciling their logo on city walls and chanting "Viva La Robotolution" at anyone within earshot. On the whole, it's played for laughs, but makes us ponder the question:
Have animated films gotten more leftist in recent years?
Political leanings in modern animation are, of course, nothing new. Less than a decade after 1937's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,' America's first animated feature-length film, was released, scores of propaganda-filled cartoons from World War II could be seen on both sides of the front, with titles like 'The Ducktators,' 'Education For Death' and 'Daffy the Commando.'
The 1990s saw a slew of Disney-released, politically correct folk tales that branched out across cultures, featuring lead characters who were Native American ('Pocahontas'), Chinese ('Mulan') and Arab ('Aladdin'). As we noted last month, the studio's upcoming 'Princess and the Frog' has already generated more controversy than it wanted over its character portrayals and ethnicities.
Yet just over the past year, a number of animated films have moved the political line from subtle subplot to overt messages.
Early summer's 'Battle for Terra,' concerning a peace-loving, nature-worshipping alien race attacked by warmongering humans seeking more land, seemingly employs a ripped-from-the-headlines style of dialogue to enunciate its message. "We need information on the enemy's strengths and numbers. This machine might hold the answer," says one human interrogator to an alien as he prods a captured robot. "So ask him," replies the alien. "Don't torture him." Later on, military head General Hemmer (voiced by Brian Cox) institutes a coup d'etat and proclaims, "Let future generations judge me," presciently predicting Karl Rove's assertion that "history is going to be kind to [George W. Bush]."The upcoming animated adventure 'Planet 51' -- about an American astronaut (Dwayne Johnson) who lands in a new world inhabited by small green creatures -- is decidedly less topical, yet still paints humans as the alien race.
The PG-13-rated '9,' Shane Acker's full-length take on his Academy Award-nominated 2005 short film, opens in a world where a totalitarian regime uses an artificially created brain to manufacture tools of war that nearly end humanity. It's up to the "stitchpunks," a ragtag group of nine scientifically engineered creatures known only by their number, to use their collective power to rally against evil authoritarian forces.
And of course, there's the granddaddy of them all: 'WALL-E.' The perceived philosophy of Andrew Stanton's Academy-award winning feature, and one of last year's most critically acclaimed movies, was claimed by virtually every political and intellectual movement. Though Stanton adamantly disavowed any political message in the film, it's hard not to read at least a little into the movie's anti-consumerist, corporations-rule-the-world slant. On the flipside stands Carl Fredricksen, the surly senior citizen hero of Pixar's summer smash 'Up' -- we can surmise he's a conservative when he admonishes a contractor on his lawn to "take a bath, hippie!" Of course, Fredricksen is voiced by Ed Asner, one of the entertainment industry's longest tenured liberal mouthpieces.
Just as the 1990s ushered in the era of political correctness in cartoons -- to the chagrin of some and admiration of others -- the line seems to have shifted once again from mere liberalism to more blatant socialist themes. We're curious to see what's in store for future animated tales.
So the question remains: Have animated films veered more left than their predecessors, or are we just reading too much into movies made for kids? Tell us what you think.

First, there is no "left-leaning message" in WALL-E. As you yourself pointed out the director himself has said there was none. So stop saying there is just to push your own agenda.
Furthermore, better left-leaning that money hungry war-mongering conservatives who believe that only they deserve civil liberties.
Cliff at 2:25PM on Oct 11th 2009
Matt, you idiot. It's the left that stifles free speech. Look at your heroes Chavez, Castro and Kim. No free press, no free expression, nothing negative. It's us conservatives who battle for freedom every day. You just want the government to wipe your ass and feed you. Did you have a bad experience with your mother growing up and afraid to take responsibility?
Cindy at 3:17PM on Oct 11th 2009
Actually, though I really liked the movie WALL-E, it was VERY leftist. The entire thing was about how humans are destroying the planet, it's like Al Gore was there when Pixar was making the movie. Yes, maybe the author is playing it up a little, but not as much as you'rte makingg it out to be.
And another thing, conservatives are NOT war-crazy. I am proud to say that I'm a republican conservative and I think I speak for on behalf of everyone who's of the same party as I when I say that it's the leftist movies and not us that are brainwashing this new generation. In school, all they teach my brother and I (he's in fifth, I'm in nineth) is that global warming exists, and that if we don't 'go green' we'll destroy our planet, and that we can make a difference if we plant trees and recycle, and all that nonsense! Well I'm rebelling against that, and so is my brother. Who's to tell us we have to 'go green'? I don't believe in that and I'm going to live my life to it's fullest, not waste it hugging trees. Yes, I believe in not littering and trying to keep our planet clean, but I'm not about to go obsessing over it.

Cliff dictators are neither conservative or liberal. They're authoritarian. Otherwise I could lump Hitler in with the KKK and the south during the civil war and call them all conservative. That would be stupid. You on the other hand are a moron. And this article is terrible. But it's aol so no surprise there. Sometimes I'm surprised that their writers can make sentences.

Money hungry? Are you saying that the Obamas, the Kennedys, the Hollywoodies, the Oprahs of this world have NO MONEY??? Is it only conservatives that have money? You are telling me that the Charlie Rangels of this world, the democratic drones we have in the house and senate have no interest in money?????? Are you blind or just blind?
The left has more money than they have a right to and they seem to be getting it on the backs of taxpaying Americans. Raising taxes, taking more from the people is their big claim to fame.
So try and tell me the left is for the poor man and I'll tell you that I am purple with blue spots and was born on the planet Obamizombablefield.
War-mongering? Who was attacked on 9-11?

The American conservative agenda is to tear down anything that even smacks of a humanistic approach to life. The Republican Party seems to have its own theme song: "Whatever It Is I'm Against It".
Bill at 5:20PM on Oct 11th 2009
A few things: First off, The idiots who posted the first two comments (the spam) need to die. Second off, Arye- Explain to me how abortion is humanistic. Please do. And as for the movies, I'm pretty sure people are just finding negative things in them, although the pics of Lenin sound scary. I personally believe that on both sides, there are major wackjobs and they're both wrong equal amounts of the time, so, instead of dealing with that crap, I prefer to stay in the middle. Maybe all of you should do this as well.

Did I miss something? Where is the American Civil Liberty Union for Conservative issues? Where is the Tax supported PBS or National Public Radio that doesn't lean left but falls over its two left feet. Oh I know we have the Teacher Union that indoctrinates the next generation of children or we control the Universities, everyone knows that the Universities are hotbeds of conservatism. How about the film industry you know how they abhor the likes of Chavez and Castro. Well I guess I see your point about all the conservative issues getting so much support both in and out of the government. I mean we are only, at least, 50% of the American populace.

The problem with leftist is that they don't take responibility for their actions...or lack of action. I grew up poor but didn't like that. I chose to educate myself to create my own biz and have things I always wanted. A nice home, car, boat and to be able to travel like I want. Who told these left people not to get the same education and accomplish things for themselves...PATHETIC. I feel sorry for you all on the left. Keep looking for your government handouts because you chose to do nothing for you and/or your families well being. Let them take care of you. Why should I have to pay the price for your laziness and for the life YOU chose to live.
alk at 7:04PM on Oct 11th 2009
I was gonna watch it cause I love Astroboy but thanks ,,cause now I won't, neither my children...no all dictators are leftist but all leftist are dictators that's for sure, it's the only way for them to stay in power indefinitely since it's against freedom, prosperity and respect of human rights pillars of humane nature So they need to oppresses and indoctrinate people in order to survive

Hey don't forget about conservatives saying the Bible is too liberal. Even God is raining on their parade to pillage, plunder, run around with prostitutes, start wars without regard to life, institute priests who molest and sodomize children, and of course interfere with being bought out by lobbyist and corporations. And they call themselves conservatives.

The ones that are greedy is the left. What is the use of working your whole life to create a comfortable life and have some leftist power hungry socialist come along and try to take it away from them to spread the "wealth". If the poor would stay in school and learn, they could make something of themselves to have money too. If you are working at a McDonalds or not working, take classes to type and other skills to work in an office so you'd be employable and would also have health insurance. There are more Democrats that are rich than Republicans and more conservatives donate money to worthy charities than the left. We just want to stay free and keep the government out of our lives. The left make the poor dependent on them so they can get more powerful so they can control the U.S. Look what Obama has done, trying to take over our health care by bureacrats that can't even run the PO and have stolen from social security and medicare for their own projects so they can say that it didn't work. The legislators should be on social security like the rest of us with no special privileges. If the health care is good enough for us, why are the legislators refusing to take the same health care? They aren't taking a % less pay to help the country and they have better retirement than some rich rights. Obama won't fix the problems we're having of tort reform with putting limits on exhorbitant punitive damages which would lower the cost of the doctors malpractice insurance which is also passed along to us. We've got to stop allowing lobbyists to give money and perks to legislators like the lawyer lobby. With printing billions of dollars that are now almost worthless as other countries don't want it anymore and it was not to stimulate anything except for the pork put in to pay back the supporters of the Democrats. No jobs were created because is wasn't intended to. Make Obama keep his promises: transparency, no lobbyists in his cabinet, no pork or earmarks, line item veto to take the pork and earmarks out, and to make actual proper changes that will cut the bureacracy in government. And there is so much corruption in government that all legislators should be audited on their income taxes. We saw so many being caught not paying their taxes when Obama nominated people and yet they still haven't taken Charlie Wrangle off his Ways and Means Committee even though he admitted to not reported property in the Domican Republic as well as other tax problems. And did the others that had to come clean, did they pay both penalties and interest? I think not. We've got to bring back morality and ethics in government.

Its kind of odd that while discussing the left leaning tilt of a movie, "leftists" are simultaneoulsy described as lazy and looking for handouts. I'm pretty sure these movie makers have equaled all our self professed financial successes and are not seeking our handouts. They may want $10 or $11 for a ticket...but I believe thats called capitalism.
And based on the common definition of "government handout", I, like many of you, can say I've never taken one. But, then, I'm only fooling myself. I went to public high school, a state college, I pay my own health insurance -- but get a tax deduction for it..and a tax deduction for my mortgage expenses as well. Like it or not, these are all forms of "government handouts". As are many student loans, business loans, etc.
So its admirable we've lifted ourself up, but we should be careful not to get too high on that horse. I know many people that were also up there in recent years. They worked hard and succeeded, but some of them fell anyway. Not out of laziness...and due to no fault of there own. Some of those "government handouts" cushioned the fall. Hopefully, when they get back up, they will be happy to "give back"
Tim at 8:46PM on Oct 11th 2009
Matt, You are correct, it is good that no left leaning people were ever money hungry, war-mongering... wait, check that, I forgot about Marx, Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler, Mao, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, etc., etc. There are too many to list. You may want to check on how the people in those leftist countries really live(d). The leaders are rich, the people are equally poor (socialism and communism), and they are free to live if they agree with everything the leadership says.
